Barangaroo has reached a major sustainability milestone after the completion of its fourth regional solar farm.
The new Carawatha Solar Farm in the NSW Riverina is now operating and supplying renewable energy to support Barangaroo’s long-term clean energy goals.
Together with solar farms in Hay, Moama, and Uranquinty, the four facilities generate around 55,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy each year. This is enough to power about 10,000 homes and adds new clean energy generation to the NSW electricity network.
The four solar farms support a 25-year renewable energy agreement that allows Barangaroo to operate with net zero emissions for decades.
The agreement secures renewable energy certificates at a fixed rate until 2050. It helps provide more certainty around energy costs and reduces exposure to changes in energy market prices.
The renewable energy agreement supports the transition to cleaner energy while helping maintain a reliable electricity network.
The arrangement allows renewable energy generated by the solar farms to enter the NSW electricity system, while Barangaroo receives the renewable energy certificates. Individual businesses and residents at Barangaroo do not need to arrange separate renewable energy agreements.
The project represents a $48 million investment in sustainable energy. It is funded by Barangaroo residents and businesses, without taxpayer costs.
The four solar farms have also created benefits for regional communities. Together, they supported around 260 construction jobs and generated about $20 million in construction activity at each site. They will also provide ongoing operations and maintenance jobs.
Barangaroo continues to focus on sustainable development and is expected to achieve its tenth consecutive carbon neutral certification under the Australian Government’s Climate Active program.
The solar farm network demonstrates how renewable energy projects can support both environmental goals and regional economic opportunities.
