Innovative technology supports faster and smarter bush fire response

New technology is helping firefighters across NSW detect bush fires earlier, improve decision-making and strengthen communication in remote areas.

Advanced tools such as AI-powered camera systems, thermal imaging drones and satellite communication are changing the way emergency teams monitor and respond to bush fires. These technologies provide earlier warnings, clearer information and better support for firefighters on the ground.

Over the past year, high-definition cameras have detected almost 4,000 fires. The early alerts have helped emergency teams respond quickly and make better decisions during fire incidents.

The camera systems have supported responses to several fires across the state, including cases where fires were identified before emergency calls were made.

Drone technology is also being expanded. More than 50 trained drone pilots are now available across NSW. Drones with thermal imaging equipment can provide live images of fire areas and help identify hot spots after major fires.

The drones can be quickly sent to areas at risk. They help firefighters understand changing conditions and improve safety during operations.

New communication technology is also being introduced to strengthen emergency response. Fire vehicles are being upgraded with improved connectivity systems, including satellite-based technology and mobile data terminals.

These systems help crews stay connected in remote locations and during disaster situations. They provide better communication, access to information and improved safety for emergency workers.

Since the start of the current bush fire season on 1 October, emergency services have responded to more than 8,750 bush and grass fires across NSW as dry conditions continue in many areas.

The use of new technology is part of ongoing efforts to improve fire detection, communication and emergency response. It aims to give firefighters more information and more time to act when fires start.
