Australia's largest synchronous condenser has started operating in Elmhurst, Victoria.
The Ararat Synchronous Condenser will allow an additional 600 megawatts of renewable energy to connect to the electricity grid. It is also expected to improve the reliability of the power supply across western Victoria.
A synchronous condenser is a large spinning machine that helps keep the electricity grid stable. It balances power generation and electricity demand and can respond quickly when demand changes.
The project was delivered and will be operated by Australian Energy Operations. Construction was carried out by Victorian renewable energy company Beon Energy Solutions.
The project is one of 12 grid upgrade projects across Victoria. Together, these projects are designed to strengthen the electricity network and allow more renewable energy to be delivered to homes and businesses.
When all 12 projects are completed, they are expected to unlock 2.3 gigawatts of clean energy. This is enough to supply about 16 percent of Victoria's annual electricity needs. The projects are also expected to create new economic opportunities for regional communities.
Project leaders said the new infrastructure will support future renewable energy projects while providing long-term benefits for local communities and improving the reliability of the electricity network.
