New Smart Water Projects Support Local Waterways and Communities

New smart water projects are being developed to protect drinking water supplies, improve waterways, and support local environments across Victoria.

A new smart wetland will be built at Birdsland Reserve near Belgrave. The Hazelvale Creek Smart Water Wetland will use real-time technology to better manage water flow into Monbulk Creek.

The $1.6 million project will improve water quality, reduce the impact of stormwater, and help protect the local platypus population in the Dandenong Ranges. It will also create a healthier waterway and provide a stronger connection between the community and nature.

The project is being delivered with support from Yarra Ranges Shire Council, which will lead the work.

The new wetland will work with existing smart rainwater tanks in the area. Together, they will help manage periods of heavy rainfall and dry conditions to support the health of the creek.

The project is part of a $24 million Integrated Water Management (IWM) grants program. The program supports water projects across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria through partnerships with local councils and water organisations.

Other projects are also moving forward, including a $2.7 million stormwater harvesting project in Sunbury. The project will upgrade a flood basin into a stormwater treatment wetland while continuing to provide flood protection.

The Sunbury project has been designed to support future population growth and changing climate conditions. The treated water will be used to irrigate Sunbury Cemetery and Kathleen Aitken Park.

A recycled water pilot project in Sunbury will also test improvements to the local recycled water plant. The project aims to supply recycled water to Jacksons Creek.

Applications for additional Integrated Water Management projects in regional Victoria are currently being assessed.

The projects aim to improve water reuse, reduce pressure on drinking water supplies, protect local ecosystems, and support healthier communities.
