New Trackwork Technology to Reduce Rail Maintenance Disruptions

New rail maintenance technology will help reduce disruptions to train services through the introduction of six advanced tilt wagons.

The tilt wagons allow pre-built sections of track, known as turnouts, to be safely moved and installed. This reduces the need for workers to build these sections on site using equipment and manual labour.

Each new concrete turnout replaces older timber sleepers and helps improve track conditions.

Rail operators estimate that using a tilt wagon can save between five and seven hours of train service disruption for each maintenance project.

The existing rail network has limited equipment for moving large pre-built track sections. The current engineering fleet has only two tilt wagons, which have been in service for more than 20 years.

The six new tilt wagons are part of a $15 million investment in rail maintenance upgrades. They have completed testing and trial operations and are expected to enter full service by July 2026.

The technology has already been successfully tested during track maintenance work at Lidcombe and Medlow Bath.

The introduction of the new equipment is part of wider efforts to improve rail reliability. Additional funding has been provided for upgrades to tracks, signals, overhead wiring and drainage systems.

Maintenance improvement programs are also being introduced in areas with high rail traffic. These programs aim to complete essential work more efficiently and reduce delays for passengers.

The new tilt wagons will allow more maintenance work to be completed away from active tracks. This will reduce the time needed for weekend track closures and limit the use of replacement buses.

The upgraded equipment will also improve safety for rail workers and help maintenance teams complete more work during scheduled closures.
