Victoria is set to build its largest battery storage project. The new one-gigawatt facility will deliver renewable power to hundreds of thousands of homes across the state.
The Portland Energy Park, developed by Pacific Green, has received approval to proceed. The project will include four battery units, each producing 250 megawatts of energy. Together, they will provide enough electricity to power about 345,000 homes at peak times. A new terminal station will connect the site to existing transmission lines.
The system will store renewable energy during the day and release it when demand rises. This process will help reduce costs for consumers and support a steady and reliable electricity supply.
Construction will create around 300 jobs. Another 60 permanent positions will remain when the facility becomes operational.
The development must meet environmental and safety standards. These include managing biodiversity, reducing bushfire risk, limiting noise, and improving nearby roads.
The battery will be one of the largest renewable energy storage systems in the world. It marks an important step in building a stronger and cleaner energy network for Victoria.
