New $8.2 Million Program Launched to Upskill Victorian Workers for AI Integration

A new government-funded initiative has been announced to assist workers in adapting to artificial intelligence technologies through free training programs. The $8.2 million AI Career Conversion program is now accepting applications, aiming to equip employees with the necessary skills to integrate AI tools into their daily workflows effectively.

The program is designed to help businesses adopt emerging technologies by providing tailored, intensive training sessions. Scheduled for two rounds per year, the initiative aims to upskill approximately 1,300 workers across various sectors. The curriculum covers key areas such as data analytics, software development, digital marketing, and business operations, with a specific focus on preparing participants for new roles including AI adoption specialists, prompt engineers, and agent managers.

Businesses operating in key economic sectors are eligible to enroll their staff in free specialist courses lasting four to six weeks, or shorter one-day workshops. The training will be delivered by leading educational institutions, including RMIT University, Melbourne Business School, and Swinburne University of Technology. These providers have emphasized that safety protocols and ethical usage guidelines will form a core component of the educational programs.

Officials state that maintaining human oversight in AI processes is critical to balancing efficiency gains with risk management. The initiative aligns with broader state strategies aimed at positioning Victoria as a leader in responsible technology adoption. As digital transformation continues to impact industries ranging from healthcare and logistics to finance, manufacturing, and creative services, the program seeks to support workforce resilience by facilitating the transition into AI-assisted roles.

The training also supports compliance with national standards for artificial intelligence usage. By focusing on skill acquisition rather than job displacement, the program aims to help workers leverage AI tools to enhance productivity while safeguarding employment in sectors undergoing rapid technological change.
