The Waratah Super Battery, located on the site of the former Munmorah coal-fired power station, is now fully operational. With a capacity to deliver 850 megawatts and store 1,680 megawatt hours, the facility can power up to 340,000 households at peak demand. The battery serves as a grid stabilizer, helping to manage fluctuations caused by renewable energy sources and protecting against outages from events like bushfires or lightning strikes.
Commissioned by EnergyCo and built by Akaysha Energy, the project involved approximately 1,000 workers during construction. It represents a significant milestone in the state’s transition toward cleaner energy infrastructure as older power stations retire. Since recent policy changes, installed battery storage capacity has increased significantly, alongside an 80 percent rise in large-scale solar and wind generation. Transgrid oversees the network operations for the facility.
