A new battery pilot in Kununurra is testing long-duration energy storage to deliver cleaner and more reliable power to regional Western Australia.
The project features a vanadium flow battery with a 78-kilowatt capacity and 220 kilowatt hours of storage. The system is designed to perform well in hot and remote conditions while providing consistent energy supply over long periods.
Horizon Power will study how this technology can be used in its network, including microgrids and off-grid systems. The goal is to find solutions that improve energy security for regional and remote communities.
Battery storage already supports Western Australia’s energy network. Large-scale batteries in Kwinana and Collie store excess solar energy during the day and release it at night when demand rises.
VSUN Energy, a subsidiary of Australian Vanadium, supplied the new battery. The company will work with Horizon Power to test system performance over the next year.
This project represents an important step toward more sustainable and resilient energy systems across the State.
