New Renewable Energy Projects Approved

Two new renewable energy projects have been approved under a fast-track process. The move aims to increase clean energy supply across Victoria. The projects support lower power costs for households.

Approval has been granted for a 332-megawatt solar farm at Meadow Creek near Wangaratta. A battery energy storage system at Hazelwood has also been approved. Both projects progressed through the Development Facilitation Program. The program is designed to speed up clean energy development.

The fast-track pathway has supported strong investment. More than $7.8 billion has been committed across 22 renewable energy projects. These projects are expected to create over 3,000 jobs during construction and operation.

Once complete, the projects will supply power to more than 700,000 homes each year. Battery storage systems will help meet evening demand. The combined capacity can support up to 1.8 million homes during peak periods.

The Meadow Creek solar farm is expected to power about 140,000 homes. The nearby 250-megawatt battery system can meet peak demand for around 85,000 homes. Construction will create more than 400 jobs. Around 60 ongoing roles will remain once operations begin.

A separate 300-megawatt battery system at Hazelwood will support power needs during high demand periods. The system can supply energy to about 104,000 homes. Construction will create 150 jobs. Five ongoing roles will continue after completion.

Project developers completed consultation with local communities. Reviews also involved key agencies such as fire, agriculture, environment, and water authorities.

The clean energy workforce is expected to grow strongly over the coming years. More than 67,000 workers are projected by 2040. Many roles will be based in regional areas. Local businesses are expected to benefit.

Ongoing investment in renewable energy continues to support low wholesale power prices. Additional projects aim to keep energy costs stable in the years ahead.
