Two new renewable energy projects in Bairnsdale aim to reduce energy costs and supply power to thousands of homes across Gippsland. An 85-megawatt solar farm and a 70-megawatt battery storage system have been approved for construction. These projects are part of a program that speeds up the development of clean energy.
The Ballantine Solar Farm will provide electricity for about 36,000 homes each year. The battery storage system will help meet peak evening demand for around 24,000 households. Together, they will create more than 170 jobs during construction and operation.
Consultations were held with nearby residents and safety agencies to ensure the projects meet all regulations. Feedback was also sought from transport and workplace safety bodies.
Since the program expanded to support renewable energy projects, it has unlocked nearly $5 billion for 18 projects. These projects will generate power for over 570,000 homes yearly and provide battery storage for nearly one million homes during peak times.
Victoria’s large investment in renewable energy has helped keep wholesale power prices the lowest in the country. Adding more renewable energy will help keep prices low in the future.
The state is on track to reach 95 percent renewable energy by 2035. This shift is expected to bring $9.5 billion in economic growth and create 67,000 jobs by 2040.
