NSW Launches First Plan to Tackle Waste Challenges

NSW has released its first waste and circular infrastructure plan to address growing waste pressures. The plan aims to ensure bins are collected, recycling is increased, and future waste needs are met.

Without action, landfill space in Greater Sydney could run out by 2030. Many regional landfills are also near capacity. Waste generation is expected to exceed available space in the next five years.

The plan introduces faster approval processes for new facilities while keeping environmental safeguards. It includes a waste infrastructure concierge to provide advice and planning support. An independent Advisory Committee will guide strategic waste infrastructure decisions.

Updates to the Energy from Waste framework are included. Modern thermal treatment technology is presented as an alternative to building new landfills. More than 2,000 energy-from-waste facilities operate in cities worldwide.

Future chapters of the plan will focus on regional and rural waste solutions, reuse, and recycling infrastructure. Public consultation will be part of this process later this year.

Chapter 1 of the NSW Waste and Circular Infrastructure Plan is available online. Information on Energy from Waste updates can also be accessed through the EPA website.
