People born in NSW aged between 16 and 21 can now choose to set up a secure Digital Birth Certificate, making it easier to access and use their identity documents.
The new digital document is available across NSW and can be created through the Service NSW app. It has been designed to meet strong security standards and gives users more control over how their personal information is shared.
The first eligible group includes people aged 16 to 21 who were born in NSW and have a NSW photo card or driver licence.
The Digital Birth Certificate can be used to confirm identity and support applications for licences and certificates needed for employment. These include workplace requirements such as responsible service and other industry-related licences.
The digital document is optional. People can choose whether to use it instead of a traditional paper birth certificate.
Over time, the Digital Birth Certificate is expected to support more online services and make it easier for people to complete transactions with government services and other organisations.
Service NSW and the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages are working with businesses, schools, clubs and community organisations to explore more ways the digital tool can support registration and service applications.
The digital certificate also provides a safer way to store an important identity document. It can help people quickly prove their identity when they need access to services, including during emergencies where physical documents may be lost or damaged.
The introduction of the Digital Birth Certificate is part of wider efforts to improve digital identity services and provide more secure online options for people across NSW.
