Four Large Battery Projects Strengthen Queensland’s Energy Supply

Four large battery projects have reached important connection and testing milestones across Queensland, supporting efforts to improve energy reliability and affordability.

The projects will provide a combined 940 megawatts (MW) of energy storage when fully operational. This capacity can support electricity supply for up to 940,000 homes during periods of high demand.

Recent progress includes the connection of new battery facilities at Stanwell and Woolooga. Other large battery projects at Brendale and Broadsound have also reached key testing and commissioning stages.

Large-scale batteries help store extra energy when supply is high and release it when demand increases, especially during evening peak periods. This helps strengthen the electricity network and provide more flexibility in managing energy supply.

The projects are part of a wider effort to expand energy storage capacity across Queensland. More than two gigawatts of large-scale battery storage capacity is expected to have been added to the electricity system since mid-2025.

Energy storage is expected to support the growth of renewable energy by helping manage changes in electricity generation from sources such as solar and wind.

The new battery projects also support investment in Queensland’s energy infrastructure and help create a more stable energy system for households and businesses.

Power network operators have connected several large battery projects over the past year, adding more than 2GW of storage capacity. Further battery projects are also being planned to increase the flexibility and strength of the electricity network.
