Southern Hemisphere’s Largest Data Centre Approved for Sydney

Sydney will soon host the Southern Hemisphere’s largest data centre. The $3.1 billion facility by CDC Data Centres will support cloud storage and the digital economy across Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

The centre is located in Marsden Park, about 36 kilometres from Sydney’s city centre. It will create 220 construction jobs and 265 operational roles, boosting Western Sydney’s local economy.

The facility is designed with sustainability in mind. Energy will come from renewable sources, and greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by up to 99 per cent by 2030. Water use will be minimal, with a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) target of 0.01. Reused chilled water and an air-based cooling system will help achieve this goal.

The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure reviewed the project carefully. Noise, air quality, and the size of the development were all considered. Approval was completed within 12 months, providing timely support for this critical infrastructure.

The data centre joins 90 other facilities already operating in New South Wales. It will provide reliable computing infrastructure for businesses, governments, and the community. The project also highlights the growing demand for digital and cloud services in the region.

The development is part of broader efforts to accelerate major investments in advanced technologies and digital infrastructure. Expressions of interest in such projects have included 48 proposals worth $136 billion, including 23 technology-related projects.
