WA Releases Draft Planning Code to Guide Renewable Energy Projects

Western Australia has released a draft Renewable Energy Planning Code and supporting Guidelines for public comment. The draft Code sets out a clear framework for assessing renewable energy projects across the State.

The Code covers wind farms and is designed to expand to solar farms and battery energy storage systems in the future. It provides consistent standards for assessing potential impacts such as noise and visual effects. Development application requirements are also clarified to give industry confidence and ensure communities understand how proposals will be evaluated.

Once finalised, the Code can be included in local planning schemes. It will create a single approval pathway for major renewable energy projects and improve transparency in decision-making. New rules will also require development approval for noise-sensitive projects near wind farms and a streamlined approval process for projects over $20 million.

The draft Guidelines on Community Benefits for Renewable Energy Projects complement the Code. They set expectations for engagement and benefits sharing with local communities.

Public consultation is open until 10 April 2026. Submissions can be made online or by mail through the Have Your Say WA website.

The planning Code aims to attract investment, support regional development, and provide clear, consistent standards for renewable energy projects in Western Australia.
